HOLINESS IS SANCTIFICATION - (Part 2)

HOLY can be defined using many terms and in different ways as nouns, verbs and adjectives but here are 4 basic meanings to summarize the general definition of the word HOLY

  1. Do reverence because association or derived from our Heavenly Father; having divine nature or origin, inspirational, magnificent, superb, awesome, sacred, exceptionally pleasing, marvelous, amazing, miraculous, incredible, glorious, majestic, unsearchable greatness, perfection - God's character in rightness, pureness amplified, excellence personified
  2. Separation unto God from sin or impurity, sanctified, set apart for God’s purpose, consecrated (devoted, dedicated) to our Lord, freed from sin’s dominion, delivered from darkness into His glorious Kingdom of Light
  3. Conduct, manner of life, blameless lifestyle, pureness in Christ, undefilement from the world, servants of righteousness, proper behavior
  4. People, places and things devoted to God, used of God, including services and ceremonies ordained by God (Godly weddings, communion, baby dedications, etc...)

SANCTIFY defined as

  1. To set apart as holy or for holy purposes to God; consecrate to God
  2. To free of sin; purify or make holy
  3. To give religious sanction to; render sacred, as a vow, commitment unto the Lord
  4. To render productive of or condusive to holiness or spiritual blessing

W. E. Vine's Expository Dictionary states - a common NT designation of all believers is "saints", "Sanctified" or "holy ones" (small letter). Sainthood, or sanctification, is not an attainment it is the state into which God by grace cleaned sinful men to begin their course as Christians. The sanctifica-tion of the Spirit is associated with the choice, or election, of God; it is a Divine act preceding the acceptance of the Gospel by the individual. Set apart from what?

Colossians 1:12-23 The power of darkness, sin's effects of separation, wickedness
Hebrews 2:9-15 Jesus sanctified us from death (spiritual separation), mental fear of death
Hebrews 10:7-21 Perfected by sanctification from sin, we enter the holiest by His blood
1 Corinthians 1:26-31 In Christ, Jesus is made unto us sanctification from the world

For what purpose?

Psalm 4:3 God has set apart His chosen vessels for Himself, fellowship John 4:23,24
1 Thessalonians 4:1-9 The will of God is possessing our vessel in sanctification & honour
2 Thessalonians 2:13-15 Chosen, salvation through sanctification of Spirit & belief of truth
1 Corinthians 7:12-14 Family blessing in unity (even unbelievers), also Malachi 2:14-16
Ephesians 5:25-27 To present a glorious Church to Himself through the Word of God

Sanctified by the Word of God

John 17:15-19 Sanctified through God's truth, His Word is truth
Psalm 119:9-16 God's Word is hidden in our heart keeps us from sin, must confess,speak
Hebrews 4:12-14 The Word of God is quick, powerful, sharper than any two edged sword
Acts 20:32 Commend you to God, the word of His grace among them that are sanctified
1 Timothy 4:4-6,12-16 Every creature of God is good, sanctified by the Word of God & prayer
